Exploring Beyond the Classroom: The Benefits of Outdoor Learning

Our Field Trip to Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden

At RH Positive Education Preschool, we believe learning doesn’t have to be confined to the four walls of a classroom. Outdoor learning offers children a unique opportunity to explore, discover, and connect with the world around them in meaningful ways.

Why Outdoor Learning Matters
Spending time in natural environments supports children’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development.

Outdoor learning:

· Encourages curiosity and exploration: Children can investigate plants, insects, and natural phenomena firsthand.

· Builds confidence and independence: Navigating new spaces and challenges helps children develop problem-solving skills.

· Promotes social and emotional growth: Working together on outdoor activities strengthens cooperation, communication, and empathy.

· Supports physical health: Running, climbing, and balancing help develop gross motor skills and overall well-being.

· Fosters a sense of wonder and connection to nature: Early exposure to the outdoors cultivates environmental awareness and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.

Learning in Action: Field Trips Every Term
To extend learning beyond the classroom, our preschool organizes a field trip every term. These excursions provide hands-on experiences that complement classroom activities and spark curiosity in new ways.

Recently, our children and their families visited the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden, a space designed for young explorers to connect with nature. The garden offered countless learning opportunities, from observing unique plants and ecosystems to engaging in interactive play stations that encouraged inquiry and teamwork. Having families join us added an extra layer of excitement, allowing children to share their discoveries and strengthen the home-school connection.

Making Memories While Learning
Field trips like this are more than just fun! They are vital learning experiences that foster creativity, problem-solving, and social skills. Children return to the classroom inspired, with new questions to explore and fresh ideas to share with their peers and teachers.

At RH Positive Education Preschool, we are committed to providing experiences that nurture every child’s love of learning. Outdoor adventures and family-inclusive field trips are just one of the many ways we help our learners grow academically, socially, and emotionally, while having fun every step of the way!
